Etching measuring 297 x 427 mm on a sheet measuring 370 x 523 mm. Third state, with the number ‘E4’ added in the bottom right-hand corner; second edition; ‘R’ watermark. A fine sheet with generous margins, showing excellent contrast, though less intense at the corners. Slight rippling at the top. The Tower is the architectural feature situated on the lagoon’s shoreline, around which the activities of boatmen and fishermen flourish. The print captures the everyday social life of the place. The artistic value of this print lies in the luminosity of the image and the movement of the water, reproduced and enhanced by the fine, undulating lines that render the surface rippled and glistening with reflections – a great technical insight on the part of Canaletto. Pallucchini writes: ‘Looking at this print, one might say that rarely has an artist been able to make engraving hatching such a pure and perfect means of expression’.
